ANTHONY SHAPIRO

Anthony Shapiro has been making pots since he was 13 years old and has not stopped since. He managed a frenetic teaching practice from the years 1992 to 1997, but because of the high demand for his own work, he partnered with another ceramicist and began to supply home decor and boutique shops in South Africa and internationally. He also became a resident artist at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal for two years.

Shapiro is influenced by modern architecture and design, and also by natural settings likes beaches and forests. He says he likes to bring the textures from his influences into his work while also keeping it "simple, clean, contemporary, and classical.  The art community calls this "timeless', which his pieces certainly are. He enjoys making tall pieces of pottery, although he laments that he's limited by the size of his kiln. A recent series of pots and vases draw various influences: from totem poles and from African pots - simplified and stacked on top of one another.

Shapiro's studio is located in Cecelia Forest in Constantia Nek in Cape Town, where he gets to practice his craft in peace and close to the natural environment he loves so much.
